Project of the Month: Millikin University Library

Millikin University Library Upgrades to Spacesaver High-density Shelving

Background:

Client: Millikin University
Departments: Library Main Stacks
Completion: 8/03/2017

Millikin University was building a new library as a part of their University Commons facility, opening for the 2017 fall semester.  They wanted to update their collection using powered high-density storage to allow for more shelf space in less square footage.

Their library collection includes:

  • 40,000 square feet of study, stacks, and service space on four floors
  • Over 189,000 physical items in the Library
  • Over 1,000 titles of print periodicals, some going back to the early 1900’s and many to the 1970’s
  • A print reference collection of over 6,000 titles (encyclopedias, almanacs, indexes)
  • and more…

Our solution:

We bid the project featuring Spacesaver Eclipse powered high-density shelving. The powered system does all the work for the user, making it ideal for heavier objects like books. However, to ensure the safety of library students’ and faculty’s safety, we included Zero Force Sensors® (ZFS), a laser system that halts operation when a person (or object) is detected between shelves during operation.

At Bradford Systems, not only do we have the most experienced storage consultants, but our connections with vendors, contractors, and architects allows us to bid better storage solutions at a competitive price.

Library Storage

The team at Bradford Systems are experts in library storage, whether it’s a-frame, cantilever, or high-density shelving for library storage. We’ve teamed up with many libraries, to improve capacity and functionality, ranging from the renowned St. Louis Public Library to many universities, local schools, and municipal libraries.
